Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night
Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night is a public sound art experience in which anyone can be part of a performance. Held around the winter holidays in dozens of cities every year, the boom box caroling work dates back to 1992, when the first performance happened with Phil Kline’s work taking up one side of a 90-minute tape and handheld boomboxes. Participants gather at an organized time, and each participant starts playing one of four parts when the organizer signals the beginning. The group then proceeds to parade and carol to the sounds of bells, voices, and percussive sounds.
The version of the application for iPhone and Android comes embedded with each of the four tracks, and when you press play one of them will be randomly chosen for you. The speed will also be randomly adjusted a bit to mimic the variance that boomboxes brought to each performance, ensuring each play through is unique for all involved. It is suggested that before the performance begins, you place your device in airplane mode to avoid interruptions.
